Not only do social workers help people maintain relationships and work out family problems, but they are also there for guidance. Regardless of the problem area, social workers are responsible for improving lives, especially when child abuse is involved. Most social workers will tell you that they prefer working in one specialized area, which in return gives them the ability to zone in on specific problems. Though it seems that social workers are all the same, there are actually many different positions. To name just a few, child and family social workers are the most common. Surprisingly, social workers can even assist employees with job related stressors. If one is interested in the health field, there are also positions available for medical social workers. When one acquires a serious illness such as AIDS or cancer, it can be devastating to cope. Social work can assist with group therapy, outreach programs, and even help with rehab programs. If you are not interested in the mental health field, there are plenty of other opportunities. From social work planners who develop programs that educate the public on a serious matter to someone who researches policies and establishes fundraisers, the ability to find what you are most passionate about is realistic.

Before deciding on such a field, it is crucial to know what will be expected. When you are working as a full time social worker, the hours generally consist of 40 hours per week. Unfortunately, weekends and long evenings may also be mandatory, if help is needed. Nonetheless, a social worker’s office environment is comfortable. Though they usually spend their time in one place, traveling is also required. No matter how enthusiastic you are, many will find that it is an emotionally draining position. It is difficult to turn your concern off, when the day is finished. Many find it hard to stop worrying about their patients, and want to do everything that they can for them. In addition to the stress, pressure also rises. Many times there are hundreds of cases to be taken care of, and agencies just can’t seem to understand that it takes time to get through each one.

Qualifications of Social Workers
In order to become a social worker, one must have a bachelor’s degree in social work. Still, it seems that psychology and sociology degrees are accepted, as long as the applicant has some sort of experience. Seeing as advancement is very likely, it is important to obtain a master’s degree, if one is interested in moving up the ladder. Most importantly, if you are looking to work in the health field, you absolutely have to acquire a master’s in social work. Although competition is always lurking in major cities, it is possible to do well, as long as you have the experience.

Social workers must be a positive influence – someone who is bright, outgoing, and mature. Without the ability to turn off emotions, it can become difficult to stay objective. Though sensitivity isocial workers find themselves in the middle of a battle. It is great to connect with your clients, but make sure that you keep it at a professional relationship. The lack of a divider can only lead to additional stress and in some cases can result in being fired.

Looking to advance? In order to do so, one has to have an abundance of work related experience. Also, they must have at least one master’s degree in the field of social work. If you enjoy helping others but just don’t feel like this career is right for you, there are others to take a look at.
