Understanding the LSAT Sections
Comprehensive LSAT preparation is essential to ensure success on test day. The following strategies are designed to provide the test taker a great head start as they prepare for the LSAT. This will increase your ability to be fully prepared for the rigors of the LSAT.
Apply your best study habits, tricks and tools for the LSAT that you’ve acquired through your years of schooling. Nothing beats hard study to fully prepare your for test day. The LSAT is one of the most difficult tests to take. You’ll need to receive a rating of at least 85% to pass it. About 80% of all test takers receive a 67% rating or “C†in course grades. Since all LSAT questions carry the same weight, select those questions that you know the answers for and complete them first. Unlike some other tests, LSAT allows guessed answers without penalizing you. The three individual sections that the LSAT tests on are Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning and Analytical Reasoning. The following is a description of each section.
LSAT Reading Comprehension Section
The LSAT’s Reading Comprehension section is very tough as it prepares you for a law career. Understanding drawing conclusions based on the text you read is primary focus of this test. The following are important points to keep in mind as you prepare for the Reading Comprehension section of the LSAT:
- There are four 500 word passages, each containing five to eight difficult questions.
- As you take the Reading Comprehension section, scan the content of each passage before reading it in great depth. Convert the main ideas of each passage into separate points. Assess the generalities of the points you’ve created and make any important notes to each. Having done this, you are better prepared to answer the questions. Go through a process of elimination for incorrect answers and then select the answer you believe is correct.
- With proper preparation, you could be one of many to pass the LSAT, continue your education, and go on to enjoy the benefits of a law career. You may want to invest in real practice tests, giving you an advantage for your test day.
LSAT Logical Reasoning Section
The LSAT’s main focus is on the Logical Reasoning section. If you have a great ability to participate in and analyze arguments, you have a skill that is the basis of a successful lawyer. There are two, possibly three sections that focus on logical reasoning. In order to do well on the LSAT, study, prepare to use logic and identify logical fallacies.
- You are given 35 minutes to complete 20-30 questions within each section. Most of the passages are up to five sentences in length and are very in-depth. You will be presented a brief argument that you will need to understand, identify any weakness and assumption and describe its logical fallacies. The questions pose both inductive and deductive logic, and will have their own logical fallacies and tricky nuances.
- Study up on basic errors of logic, since the questions will also be purposely worded in ways that will throw you. You will be able to take the proper approach once you identify which of seven different question types you are addressing.
- To do your best on the LSAT, you may want invest in a full LSAT preparation program. Think of it as an investment in your own future. Choose a program that is current and contains real tests, not test look-alikes. The program should present many questions and prep tests. Once completed, review your errors and use it as a tool for part of your studies.
LSAT Analytical Reasoning Section
This difficult section of the LSAT referred to as games, can be daunting but with a few key techniques, you’ll be better prepared to handle it. Deductive reasoning is the primary focus of this section as well as comprehension and handling of complex synships. You will be diagramming relationships in systems that are described in the question. The section has four games that are made up of approximately twenty four questions. Each game consists of up to nine questions.
There are many test prep programs available to help you identify these various games. Study up on them and you’ll be able to quickly diagram the relationships that are presented. The diagram is used to deduce the right results and finalize the game. From there you will be able to come up with the correct answers to the questions.
Remember to address those questions that you feel you have the right answer for first. Then you can go back and complete the rest as time allows. Try to answer as many as possible to improve your overall rating. LSAT allows for guessing, so use it if you need to. As with any test, prepare by keeping focused on your studies for the best results.
