ASVAB Basics
For those wishing to enter into the US military, the entrance exam given is called the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). Maintained by the Department of Defense, this the ASVAB tests eight areas of knowledge: Electronics Information, Auto and Shop Information, General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematical Knowledge, Mechanical Comprehension, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension.
ASVAB Scoring
The ASVAB is the product of extensive research and was first introduced in 1968. It is scored using three basic composites called Career Exploration Scores. These results can be applied to many areas outside of the military, as it determines how a test taker scores based on their gender. The results of your test will be explained to you so that you will understand how the results apply elsewhere.
There are differences in the ASVAB and other entrance exams; it does not give a pass or fail grade, you simply need to receive a minimum percentile in order to enlist in the military. Results of the ASVAB test are mainly used to help determine how well you might do once in the military, and even outside the military in civilian jobs. You need to check with a recruiter to find out what the minimum percentile is for the branch of military you want to enlist in.
